The recent 2023 American Society of Dermatologic Surgery’s annual conference in Chicago, Illinois, was a great chance to reconnect with colleagues, be inspired by amazing keynote speakers, and to discover new technologies. Chicago may not be renowned for its weather at the year’s end, but this was more than compensated for by the friendliness of attendees and by the quality of presentations and workshops.
Leaders from around the world presented on diverse topics and as expected, discussed evolving therapies, and considered refinements of existing ones. Some highlights that come to mind are.
- Prof Jean Carruthers, a pioneer of cosmetic botulinum toxin, proffered invaluable tips on how to achieve optimal results with dermal fillers and toxins. With an emphasis on safety and an understanding of facial anatomy, Prof Carruthers explored the latest trends in cosmetic injection techniques.
- Dr Eric Bernstein presented an entertaining walkthrough of a new resurfacing laser (Ultraclear). Dr Bernstein amazed the audience with photographs of his patients with severe scars from trauma and burns, showing significant improvements after treatment. This technology also offers a new option for the rejuvenation of sun-damaged skin. (And is now available at Sky Blue Dermatology!)
- Sessions covering equity and inclusion were great learning experiences. I find it difficult to remember the content of sessions when attending conferences in a very different time zone, but listening to some excellent thought leaders at this meeting, I feel confident that I have brought back to my practice an increased awareness, understanding, and empathy for persons from diverse backgrounds.
- A keynote on “Teamwork and Leading high-performance Teams” by NYT bestselling author Adrian Gostick was enlightening and provided several take-home messages. Leadership styles have evolved rapidly, with changes demanded by millennials and newer generations. Recognition, engagement and empathy are keywords to consider in developing effective leadership. Furthermore, encouraging leaders amongst our staff will produce not only immediate results but also intangible benefits and long-lasting mindset growth that will evolve further with the next generation.
