The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery’s annual conference is a wonderful opportunity to gain inspiration and knowledge from an elite group of US and international speakers and hear about the latest cosmetic and surgical dermatology trends. I always look forward to this event, and this year’s meeting in Orlando, Florida, lived up to expectations with excellent presentations, workshops and live patient demonstrations.
This year’s agenda included over 90 sessions structured to enhance reconstructive and cosmetic dermatology knowledge. The opportunity to participate in discussions and observe close-up live demonstrations enhanced the learning experience and the exchange of ideas. The warm atmosphere and collegiality at this type of international gathering make for a wonderful experience.
Here are some highlights from the conference:
Advances in Laser-Assisted Drug Delivery Dr. Merete Haedersdal, a prominent figure in translational medicine within dermatology, delivered a wide-ranging keynote address that included advances in fractional laser-assisted drug delivery. Her team’s research includes innovative techniques such as laser-assisted delivery of PD-1 inhibitors for treating basal cell skin cancers. Dr. Haedersdal’s keynote was thoroughly impressive, and the potential impact of her team’s latest research on the daily management of dermatology patients is highly anticipated.
Live Demonstrations The conference included live demonstration sessions where esteemed dermatologists treated actual patients. Brazilian dermatologist Rossana Vasconcelos showcased her technique for buttock augmentation with Sculptra. Although it is not a procedure I intend to perform, it was intriguing to observe.
Neck and Décolletage Rejuvenation Of particular relevance to our patients were demonstrations on neck and décolletage rejuvenation using biostimulators Sculptra and Radiesse. Initially limited to facial aging and volume loss treatments, dermatologists have now expanded their focus to include these other areas. Joely Kaufman and Jeremy Green demonstrated their techniques, providing detailed explanations of key considerations for optimal results. Those interested in rejuvenation treatments are encouraged to contact Sky Blue Dermatology to schedule an appointment with one of our experienced cosmetic nurses.
Ultraclear Laser Technology It was insightful to hear various speakers discuss the new and innovative laser technology, which we proudly introduced at Sky Blue Dermatology over 12 months ago. I had the pleasure of meeting the designers and experts at Acclaro, the company behind the Ultraclear laser. This state-of-the-art technology is used for a wide range of dermatological treatments, including skin resurfacing for sun-damaged and aged skin, scar revision, and pigmentation issues. The Ultraclear laser offers precise control and minimal downtime, making it an excellent option for patients seeking effective skin treatments.

The ASDS meeting can be overwhelming, so it was refreshing to take a break and explore downtown Orlando, including a visit to the Natural History Museum. Set in a historic 1927 courthouse, I was enthralled by the exhibits on Central Florida’s early inhabitants. I learned about the Timucua, and later the Seminoles in the 1700s, as well as non-native settlers. The museum also delves into significant conflicts between civil rights activists and the Ku Klux Klan. It explores transformative changes in the 20th century, such as the arrival of Disney World in 1971.
